Badakhshan province, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Far away from the war, in the remote hills of Badakhshan, there is another battle raging. Trundling into the valleys on dusty roads ripped up by large SUVs, an Afghan task force is heading towards their target: an industry so profitable that many fear it's Afghanistan's only viable option once the West pulls its troops and money out.
We've joined up with the Ministry of Counter Narcotics looking for opium. Here in Badakhshan, the Taliban aren't much of a problem. The real issue is the business that has kept Afghans afloat for many years. READ MORE
" Police in Nakuru on Wednesday arrested three people who tried to fleece a girlfriend of marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru three days after his burial.
The three are being held at the Central Police Station after their plan to lure Judy Wambui to sign up for a suspicious deal at a Nakuru hotel failed.
“We are holding three suspects and we are interrogating them to establish their motive for calling Ms Wambui to partner with them only a few days after Wanjiru was buried,” said Nakuru police boss Johnston Ipara. READ MORE

The Joint Admissions Board should be dissolved is a mutual feeling among most of the private universities in Bungoma South District.
The board that selects and admits students to public universities is not entrenched in the Universities Act, which guides higher education in Kenya, the National Association of Private Universities said.
The JAB is not serving its purpose as it is now overwhelmed with many students that it has to leave many of them out of the selection. This year, only 24,000 out of 94,000 students who qualified to join university by attaining a mean grade of C+ in their Form Four exam were admitted by the Board.
United States is following up leads on possible pending Al Qaeda terrorism activities. This comes after five weeks of analyzing information siezed from Osama bin Laden's hideout by CIA led team.
" WASHINGTON – The U.S. is tracking possible new terror targets and stepping up surveillance of operatives previously considered minor al-Qaida figures after digging through the mountain of correspondence seized from Osama bin Laden's hideout, officials say. The trove of material is filling in blanks on how al-Qaida operatives work, think and fit in the organization, they say.
The new information is the result of five weeks of round-the-clock work by a CIA-led team of data analysts, cyber experts and translators who are 95 percent finished decrypting and translating the years of material and expect to complete the effort by mid-June, two U.S. officials say."

Ole Kiraka a.k.a Super Mambo, as is popularly known by his fans, was released today morning after enjoying services of/as a ‘guest of state’ of Tanzania at a police station across the border, near NamangaTown. His woes began late last Friday night, when as usual, he crossed border to Tanzania to perform at a popular joint. While performing his first single ‘WachaUtiaji’ alongside the club's in-house band - Punda Mgonjwa, and with the club full house, Super Mambo noticed some TZ policemen on patrol had entered the club to grab two for the road to ease the cold of the very night. According to Super Mambo, the policemen looked cold and bored. This is when he decided to psyche up his new fans (policemen) with some lines from his new single, ‘Mikono juu! Mikono juu! Mr. Officers! Naomba niwashike! Mikono juu!’ This was committing a major ‘seppuku’. On hearing this, in the blinking of an eye, the policemen rumbled Super Mambo down-a-floor and frog matched him to the nearest police station. He was arraigned today morning in court and with a charge sheet of attempts to ‘harass’ and ‘arrest’ innocent policemen but was set free without bail. Mad Mullah, madness incorporated.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Identical twins Julian and Adrian Riester were born seconds apart 92 years ago. They died hours apart this week. The Buffalo-born brothers were also brothers in the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor. Professed friars for 65 years, they spent much of that time working together at St. Bonaventure University, doing carpentry work, gardening and driving visitors to and from the airport and around town.
"It was fun to see them, just quiet, gentle souls," Yvonne Peace, who worked at the St. Bonaventure Friary for nearly 21 years, said Friday.
They died Wednesday at St. Anthony Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., Brother Julian in the morning and Brother Adrian in the evening.
Both died of heart failure, said Father James Toal, guardian of St. Anthony Friary in St. Petersburg, where the inseparable twins lived since moving from western New York in 2008.

Moammar Gadhafi is ready for a truce to stop the fighting in his country, the visiting South African president said Monday after meeting the Libyan ruler, but he listed familiar Gadhafi conditions that have scuttled previous cease-fire efforts. Rebels quickly rejected the offer.
South African President Jacob Zuma said Gadhafi is ready to accept an African Union initiative for a cease-fire that would stop all hostilities, including NATO airstrikes in support of rebel forces. "He is ready to implement the road map," Zuma said.
NAIROBI, Kenya, May 26 - Renowned Catholic priest Father Renato Kizito was arrested on Thursday over fresh charges of sexual abuse following accusations by his 26-year-old male secretary.
It was a Friday morning; I woke up ululating and gallivanting like a baboon that had spent a good night on a hanging line. I was in full full condition after sitting for my end of semester exams. This called for celebration. A Friday it was, the day that our good Lord had made, the day I got a chance to bond with my fellow ‘teachers’ of the booze. We went to town to grab two for the road although ‘two for the road’ in my case applied to two mugs of chicken soup. I must admit that Eldoret was the place to be because I never regretted the day my old man brought me to Chep in a Peugeot 404 pick up truck; his most treasured investment that then came breathing fire, wading through crater size potholes of Juction- Chepkoilel road, potholes that could swallow a whole combine harvester. In the trunk was one coffin-size suite case that had left a clear message to my fellow villagers that a ‘baboon’ among them was going to advance his ordinary levels somewhere at Koilel.
The maiden Friday kept reminding me that I would soon be heading back to the village where I was a royal customer at Gikondi Bar and Restaurant alias The Synagogue. The Synagogue was strategically located at the anals of Kiamaiko, a small shanty Mung’etho (Place to Hangout) which was the economic hub of the village. The last time I was at the village, Kiamaiko was some drunkard steps away from the local Mama Bima' who apparently happened to be Mama Gathanga, mother to Gathanga the insane cousin of mine who had gone bananas some years back thanks to some weed from Mt.Kenya forest. Gathanga used to be one ‘forkjembe’ with close resemblance to a traditional granary in Kitui when it came to hygiene (with a soft touch to my distant relatives from Kitui).
On this fateful Friday, the teachers of the booze and I, like a taboo, were on their way to some serious booze lectures at Black ball alias The Clinic. The Clinic attracts every Tom, Dick and Harry for some serious booze and music lectures or rather what you would call an entertainment course that is rarely offered at Chep because it ‘does not have exams’. This is a place you get one for the road and by the time you are on the seventh one, you are already mumbling a little French and Rocket Science. When provoked, you explore combat engineering where by, you decide to trade free blows to fellow revelers who in turn return hotter ones to your face. By the time you are done, you gully creep your way back to Chep like a tired tuk tuk that had a long day overloading.
However on our way to town, the ‘path’ lured us Kambi Nairobi, a place I must admit I’ve never been to in the three years I’ve been in Chep. Kambi Nairobi is situated some ‘lazy cow’s strides’ away from Farm. Like a cat, its curiosity and nine lives, we decided to explore it from the curiosity brought about by what the names Kambi and Nairobi may suggest to me or rather to you. “You all know that cats were awarded nine lives but the Almighty gave us only one life so that we can live it fully without regrets,” Odhis justified our adventure. As we found out, Kambi Nairobi offers some dead silence like a grave yard but its inner core offers you a one twende, tujionee na tujivinjari experience if Chang’aa and Busaa are to go by.
In this vibrant underground city, we cat walked along its ‘streets’ like confused models. ‘Kambi Nairobi’ is not a phrase you are likely to come across in the daily newspaper, or listed in the Nairobi Stock Exchange and or in the current edition of the telephone directory. Wherever it got its name from did not add up much but whoever gave it that name must have realized that, it was a place of ‘cool waters,’ because the kind of ‘water’ being distilled there was a little bit bitter than the Ruaraka one or the one Jesus turned into wine at Galilee and left bewildered wedding revelers begging for more.
Being a locally manufactured ‘chimp’ for ‘chimpanzee,’ one who had the privilege of growing up somewhere at the heart of Mukuru kwa Njenga, atmospheres of this nature are no stranger to me. In one of the dens, “Welcome to happy valley,” a man bellowed. The breath from his mouth clearly indicated that whatever he had consumed was liable to send you to an instant if not self imposed coma. Inside the big hut, was a pack of men with white recycled kasuku cooking fat cans glued to their hands, some half awake others half dead. Buddha was with them.
By sun set we were sitted round in the hut like the twelve disciples eagerly waiting for the last supper. A few glued to the kasuku and others dead drank. I knew this was no place for chicken soup and decided to sample whatever the concoction was to offer knowing well that Fridays come once in a week. I partook the bitter stuff. It was bitter, as bitter as the bitter herbs that Hammurabi and his subjects partook before embarking on a journey to the Promised Land. Anything that happened after that only Buddha knows. I regained consciousness at the local district hospital two days later confused like a village mullah who lost all his teaching materials in a pit latrine after attending to a long call of nature. That was one blush with death. I promised myself this would be the basis for my New Year resolutions. Happy New Year!
