The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is part of nine marathons sponsored
by Standard Chartered Bank across the world- Mumbai, Dubai, Bangkok,
Singapore, Hongkong, Jersey, Falkland Islands and Kuala Lumpur.It has been held annually since 2003 when it began with 4,000 participants. Today, it boasts of over 16,000 participants taking part in 42, 21, 10 and 4 kilometer races.
In 2005, the marathon hit headlines when Chilapong a mother of two from Pokot District, Kenya, whose husband had sold three chicken to raise Chilapong's fare to Nairobi for the race, won the race taking home over USD 23,000.
Among other things, the event raises money to support Seeing is Believing, a Standard Chartered Bank initiative aimed at combating preventable blindness
