Creating
jobs through tourism
Then there are these two chicken I’ve been ‘zoo
keeping’ and yesterday they engaged me into a glare of sympathy that kept me
thinking being broke and jobless leaves one feeling a-bit-useless:-Now, as I
ponder about joblessness in Kenya under a mango tree this hot afternoon, I can
spot some Kazi kwa Vijana champs a
distance away doing what the local county council grader forgot to do to the
unmaintained weather road serving my fellow villagers downstream. The scorching
sun favors none of them.
You’ll never know the magnitude of being jobless in
this country until the day you go round looking for a job. Mahamud Walalo a
jobless champ tells me, “If being jobless was an economic activity this
sub-Saharan side of Africa, many of us would be billionaires.” When the other
day I heard Ruto the William champ friend of mine from 64 talk of the need to
increase annual tourists numbers in the country, I felt he had a point.
With joblessness running high by day, Kenya needs to create at least hundreds and hundreds of jobs annually. The only realistic way of doing so in my view would be through development of tourism. Today tourism is one of the largest industries the world has seen but Africa gets a relatively smaller percentage of the global market. Some of the major tourist destinations of the world, such as Spain, have had years they received more tourists each year than their entire population. High tourist arrivals are catalyst to job creation resulting from increased service offering activities. All
in all, the local tourism industry has been on the right track,
particularly after the ‘prophets who saw’ the vision 2030 recognized the major
role its set to play in Kenya’s economy in years to come, and therefore laying
strategies that I’ll not get into detail to be achieved as time goes by.
